As Seen On: WeAreIU-- "How to turn any room into a productive office"

Hey all!
I have another wonderful post for you :) This little something was written over at WeAreIU.com! I hope you like it, and if you do--don't forget to share this article with your friends.

Hey Hoosiers!
Now that we're all off on our own getting ourselves up and in action is sometimes hard to do alone. These next couple steps can hopefully get you back in the grove of being productive without your parents nagging over your shoulder. Whether you are in an apartment or stuck at the dorms, these steps can really help anyone get their rear in gear... just in time for finals!

Turn Your Room Into A Productive Office graphic

Define your work space

It can be really hard not to just work in your PJs while lounging in bed 24/7. I know I was on the struggle bus my freshman year especially! Defining your workspace just means treating your desk as an office. Even though no one is holding your accountable try setting time frames in which you must be "at work." This helps me make sure I get the proper studying done every day. And if you become an expert at that, bump it up a notch, try defining how you LOOK at your workspace--this will prepare you mentally for a day in the office.

Hang shelves/utilize them wisely

Getting things off your desk means clutter cannot distract you! Everything needs a home in your new defined workspace so hang shelves, utilize plastic organizers, and put everything where it goes. I've hear of people using shoe racks to hold their printers and papers proving you can't be too creative when it comes to organization.

Create a mood board

This means creating a real life Pinterest board--fill your wall by your desk with pictures of things you like, stuff that inspires you, or motivational quotes. Whatever gets you excited to work and pumped to use your desk is best!

Avoid distractions

Facebook, Twitter, Texting, Email! All of these things can jump in the way of you getting an important project done. What I like to do in order to avoid being distracted by these spiraling time wasters is set a time limit/routine and stick to it. For example, if I know a project is going to take two hours I start by spending 5 minutes checking those distractions and making myself at ease (and not feeling like I need to be on them while I work). Then every half hour I check them again for another 5 minutes. Having a set timer is a perfect way to make sure your actual work still gets done without shutting out all social media!

As seen on: WeAreIU-- "How to stay safe on campus"

Good afternoon--

Check out what I did over on WeAreIU.com. I have been writing for them a little over a year now, and I absolutely love doing so. I enjoy sharing my experiences about college for all current and prospective students to read. If you like this article, don't forget to check out my profile and read everything else that I've written for WeAreIU.

Hey Hoosiers!

Bloomington is by no means a terrible or scary place to be. It's full of wonderful buildings and too many gorgeous trees. But, everyone should always know how to play it safe and understand what to do in a situation if it goes south. Statistically speaking, 1 out of every 5 women will be sexually assaulted on their campus every year. That's a really scary number to think about. Today I want to talk to you about the Do's and Don'ts to keep you safe on campus.

Do: Always know where you are. IU is a big and winding campus. It's set up beautifully in a way that looks like a park; but often times, if you aren't 100% sure of the campus it can be pretty easy to get lost. Before you head out always know where you are going--bring a map if you aren't absolutely sure and always have your phone charged and in hand in case of an emergency. If there is ever a time that you are lost, scared, or just want a safe and comfortable ride home, contact the IU Safety Escort. This is a service that you have already paid for with your transportation fees, so definitely take advantage of it!

A safety escort van

Do: Travel with a friend. Whenever you have the opportunity, go places with someone that you know. What I like to do is check to see if my friends want to come along--if I'm going to the library, maybe they want to come to! Traveling together makes you less of a target and keeps both you and your friend safe! If there is a time when you don't have anyone to walk with take a bus, call a taxi, or walk on well populated and busy streets.

Don't: Be careless. The simplest thing I can ever tell you about being safe on campus is to use common sense. By no means was my intention of the article to scare you, yet these situations happen and everyone needs to be prepared. Always know your surrounds, stay with someone you know, and use you head when out and about on campus. These do's and don'ts can be applied to life anywhere in the world--the only thing you need to remember is don't be careless.

If you want to read even more great tips and tricks about being safe on campus read  We're All Consenting Adults Here and Playing it Safe at IUAnd don't forget to follow the entire "Protect IU Crew" on Twitter for some more safety tips!

What I've Learned This Week

Hey guys! I'm BAACCKKK

This new segment is something that I am hoping to publish ever Friday morning for you (since I have gobs of time to do nothing during my midnight shift)! It'll kind of be like a chance to do my weekly recaps again without having to attach a video every time; however, sometimes when I feel like doing another weekly or daily vlog, this will be the post in which you can find links to those videos on youtube.

So, without further ado--here's all the good stuff... everything I learned this week!!

Source
Credit Cards are cool
I finally got accepted to get a Discover card, and I received mine in the mail just the other day. Don't fret, I'm responsible and understand how they work! I will be using mine to build credit--I feel like such an adult.

Agnosia
I am taking a cognitive neuro science class as an credit for my psychology cognate. So far, it's really entertaining and my prof seems to be super understanding. He makes 8am classes fun and eye opening. Yesterday I learned what Agnosia is. It's a disorder whereby people cannot identify objects or see what the meaning of a visual object is. Some really interesting variations include: prosopagnosia-difficulty recognizing faces, alexia-difficulty recognizing words, or even zooagnosia and vegetagnosia! Check out this video we watched in class: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aplTvEQ6ew

There are 4 types of gamers
The achiever, socializer, explorer, and killer! Which are you? In my game design class we talked about games that appeal to only a specific type of gamer and others that appeal to multiple. Today's articles go more in depth and talk about eight or so different types of people who play games, but for the most part I like these four categories!

Sleep is not necessary
As most of you know, I have really been MIA for a long time. Every time I come back I have excuses for why I've been gone for so long, but they basically entail all the same things--I've been busy with work and school! I have two jobs now (which equals about 40 hours a week) plus school work on top of all that. My job with UITS TCC consists of one midnight shift from 12a-8a! This means I have really learned how to function on literally no sleep. All nighters are becoming a habit now.

Time to fill you in

Dear critters,

I've fallen off the face of the earth lately. And for that I am sorry. If any of you follow me on Instagram or Twitter you will have noticed the same absence there as well. After I got my wisdom teeth taken out a couple of weeks ago, my life has gotten a little hectic... Let's start with the beginning.

As most of you know, I work at Charlotte Russe and have worked here for a little over a year now. However, when the summer started I wasn't getting enough hours, so I took on another job. I am now working at the Indiana University Foundation Telefund on top of CR. In the past (before CR), I worked at the Telefund once before for a semester. I knew what I was getting into, what I was capable of, and what the job would entail. At the time, I could totally handle another job.

A week or so after accepting that job, I got an offer from CR for a promotion! Of course I was going to take it, and I was so pumped to be moving up!! I am now a key holder/manager which means I get a few more hours, a little better a pay, and an experience like no other. I am so thankful for this opportunity to move up and learn more about how this corporation works; however, this is a new stress on my shoulders. When I say stress, I do not mean anything bad--but, of course I need training, time to learn, and have a whole set of new tasks to master. This promotion is wonderful, but has added more on my plate.

So, now I am an employee at the Telefund as a caller AND a manger at Charlotte Russe.
But, I don't stop there. I like to keep busy, and I'm not complaining about anything that I have taken on...it's just a lot on my plate and often times blogging gets pushed aside.

On top of CR and TF, I am currently working with a group of my best girl friends on an amazing and exciting project. I don't want to spill too many of the details just yet, but the girls and I working on creating an amazing blog (and more) for fashion, beauty, health, etc!! This is another task that I am so thankful to be a part of; however, it's another thing on my list of things to do.
All these jobs keep me busy, and I love it! I am also working on achieving two IT certificates in web design and media publishing. I am taking two online classes a week for the next month or so to accomplish this! Also, next week I start my online math class at Ivy Tech!
Just a couple more things to fill you in on now...

Today I accepted an interview with UITS IT Consulting. At the end of my spring semester I applied to work with UITS in order to have the opportunity to build resume in the technical world, as well as, get experience and gain knowledge about what I want to do for a future career. I believe the interview went very well, and I feel confident in what might come. If I find out any more details you all will be one of the firsts to know!

And finally, all of this action in my life has warranted a break don't you think, so SkyCzar, his family, and I are headed off to North Carolina to the castle in the sky for a week long adventure of fun, relaxation, and much needed rest. This time away is exactly what I need right now, and hopefully when I get back I can jump back into my normal routines and back into the blogging stage.

I want to thank you all for all of the birthday wishes yesterday! I had a wonderful time!!

Sky's Graduation [Vlog 05/09-05/11]

Good evening critters!

Since summer is approaching and school work is now minimal I figured I would try to start up the weekly recaps again. This video was just from one weekend... and sadly, it didn't get published as quickly as I would have liked. But, better late then never, right?

I hope you like it :)

As Seen On: WeAreIU.com-- "5 Places to Study (besides the library!)"

Hello again critters!

I'm finally back from a long couple of weeks spent studying (aka cramming) and taking horrendous tests. I really appreciate all of you supporting me through my college journey and respecting my time away from the blog.

Before my study break session began I wrote an article for my school's blog, WeAreIU.com, which was published later that week. Check it out and enjoy!!

If you love this please don't forget to comment, subscribe, and share it all over the web!
I love you all! Peace OUT

Hey Hoosiers!

As finals approach more people are studying than ever before. Oops, I mean, No.. I'm not cramming for these finals.

Okay, okay, we all are doing it. But, now the library is packed, and no matter how many times you shush the dorms are still too loud!! So where else is there to go on campus?

Luckily, we have one of the most beautiful campuses in America with lots of grassy and shaded areas, plus tons of beautiful building with nice desks and tables to sit and do those readings we should have done weeks ago.

1. Your laundry room.

The soothing noise of the clothes spinning can really get me in the vibe to study and focus. Plus, rarely anyone is wanting to hang out in the basement, so hey, you'll have the whole place to yourself.

2. The informatics building.

Of course, this building isn't open all hours of the day. However, you should still consider it as a viable option. They have wonderful couches with bar tables and stools set up along the walls. All of this is just around the corner to the left.

3. The language learning lab in Ballentine.

Did you know there was another lab in Ballentine? I didn't until a couple weeks ago. No more waiting in line at the packed one on the first floor :) Hardly anyone is ever in the other labs!!

4. The arboretum.

Uh, duh! Just duh. If it's a nice day lay out in the sun and enjoy it!

5. Forest's Tree House computer lab.

This dorm's new revamp left them with some awesome rooms upstairs in what they call the Tree House! Check it out and find the computer lab because I know you will make this your new hang out area. And hey, they have a pool table for when you need to take a break from all that studying.
P.S. To read more about Forest check out this post!

Good luck on your finals!

Meanwhile, studying for finals

Critters!

This is all I have to say...

Why did I skip all of those classes? Why didn't I do those assigned readings when they were assigned? Who makes these tests?!

I'm worried the study guide isn't going to be like the test!!

Being myself

Hey critters!

Source
Yesterday I had a career fair. It was the first one I have ever attending because I just switched majors to Informatics. It was so stressful and fun and gave me a great look into what to expect when applying for big girl jobs after I graduate.

Anyways, before I walked into the giant convention center that would be packed with employers and different companies looking to hire, I stated how I was going to introduce myself to everyone over and over again. I wanted to seem super professional and cool so I practiced exactly what I was going to say. But, when I walked into that building everything had escaped me. I didn't know how to do anything but smile and walk.

At that frozen moment I realized, there's no one else I needed to be today except myself. Of course employers are going to want to see that I can carry myself well and talk great; however, the key to this whole career fair thing was being myself. I smiled at every person, told them about what I can do and what I am interested in doing, and reiterated that life was about learning and that's what I was going to accomplish no matter what.

I feel great about that experience that I had yesterday. I got to meet with a lot of outstanding companies and people, and I think some of them even liked me too. Hopefully I can have the opportunity to work for one of them, but, no matter what, I have learned something new about the powers of being myself.

Brainscape--The ultimate flashcard application

Good afternoon critters!

Today I am going to discuss one of the most useful studying applications available. Whether you are sitting at a desktop, laying on the couch with your iPad, or walking to class with your iPhone, Brainscape is the best app to use for studying flashcards on all devices...and its FREE!

By creating an account either online or through the app itself, you can start to create flashcard libraries. These libraries are like our rubber banded card decks most of us use today. Brainscape allows you to make flash cards that are exactly like the paper ones but so much better. This app gives you the opportunity to have that same learning experience, but without the mess of tediously writing them out or the hassle of carrying a bunch of cards around.

Screenshot from the app on my phone.

Cards can be created on any of your devices (however, advanced settings are only available on desktop). You can add text, images, sounds, and more to help you study in the best way possible.

Brainscape gives you the opportunity to select how well you knew each individual card, which then gives you a breakdown of how well you know the entire set. This is benefitial because it allows each user to rate the card on their own judgement of their confidence and achievement. As you study, cards that you do not know very well will pop up more frequently than those that you have selected as knowing perfectly. Cards can also be starred, skimmed through, or searched specifically.

There have been numerous studies on the effectiveness of flashcards, but with Brainscape's confidence-based repetition method, it has been shown that this application can help you succeed better than any other app available.

And that's not even the best part. The reason that I love Brainscape so much is because the cards that I make can be shared with anyone. When I finish making a deck for my Art History class, I can post a link to my deck on the class' website and allow other people to study using my flashcards. Also, on days when I don't have time to make my own deck, there are hundreds and probably thousands of pre-made decks available!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHi9PdmhEL0

This video is a little old, but it really helps in explaining the concepts, functionality, and goals of this application. You can create an account today on any device for free!!

Penultimate-- A simplistic note taking app for iPad

Good afternoon critters!

Today I am going to discuss one of the most basic handwriting apps out there. Now, when I say basic though,  I do not mean "unimportant" or "not the best." For taking those every day notes--Penultimate is by far one of the most superior…and, its free!

All images are from this source.

Penultimate is (in my opinion) one of the easiest to use handwriting apps for iPad. You can achieve the natural experience of writing on pen and paper that you are used to without the actual paper.

This app is run by Evernote; therefore, by setting up an account you can sync your notes over all devices to be easily accessed, printed, or shared.

Creating new notebooks is a breeze, and titling them is even easier. Penultimate (with your permission) can gain access to your calendar which organizes your notebooks perfectly based on your location, events, and times. However, if you want to title them something different it's as easy as double clicking on the notebook covers.

When writing actual notes you have multiple choices for pen colors, styles, and thicknesses. Words can be erased, moved, or un-did [is that a word, haha]. You also have the option to zoom in on a page in order to write large, but have it look small, which can create the most legible notes ever seen on an iPad!

Pages can also be moved around and reordered, merged with one another, or deleted entirely. There are different page styles like grid, lines, and plain. Using an electronic notebook like Penultimate gives you way more customizability, neatness, and unification that the original pen and paper.

If you want to learn more about Penultimate visit their official website here. This app is beautifully organized and designed, and can be perfectly integrated into any class or lifestyle. Purchase it at the app store for free now!

Have any questions or suggestions for future app recaps? Contact me or comment below :)

Twenty Apps for Teachers and Students [Tuesday Twenty]

Hey critters!

Today I have another iPad related post :) I have been loving using mine for school AND play, but I think that a lot of times people struggle to find those amazing apps to help them stay organized, productive, and successful--and when this happens, the only thing left to do is play games.

Sometimes games can be fun, entertaining, and even a little educational; but, let's focus on the other ways to use your iPad.

Being that I am currently a student, I am going to focus on some amazing applications available for students and teachers. If you want to see/hear more about a certain app please, please, please comment below and tell me so!

Here's this week's Tuesday Twenty:
Twenty Apps for Teachers and Students
  1. iStudiez Pro- This is an amazing planner app perfect for students. You can insert your term, classes, grades, and more. It even allows you to add weighted grades and make contact forms for easy access to certain classmates and professors.
  2. TeacherKit- No more paper planners for teachers either! This app lets you create multiple classrooms where you can store student grades and behavior records, take attendance and create seating charts. There's so much packed into this app!
  3. Socrative Clicker- Now this one is both for teachers and students. A teacher can set up a question to quiz students in the middle of the lecture or create real tests (either for a grade, or just to see where the entire class stands). The answers can be anonymous or not, and this app is a great way to get students involved!
  4. Keynote- This is Apple's version of Microsoft Powerpoint. Any teacher needs this to make basic slideshows. Every student needs it as well--not only for slideshows, but to convert those slides into PDFs and other usable formats.
  5. Genius Scan- So sometimes, even in a tech society, there's still those teachers who think they need to give you paper handouts. This app allows you to literally scan that paper using the camera and save it as a file on your iPad... seriously, genius!
  6. Dropbox- There are other ways to store, share, and access your files among many devices; but, I find that Dropbox is the best. Often times it is perfectly integrated into other applications. Basically, you need a place to store your files on your iPad, and Dropbox works flawlessly.
  7. GoodReader- This is one of those apps that sync perfectly with Dropbox. There's so much good about this application I am going to have to do it's own separate post. Anyways, GoodReader is an app that lets you write on PDFs! This is what I use for all my notes. There's so much more than just a PDF writer that you can use this for...but thats for a different post.
  8. PenUltimate- Another note taking app. This one is free, easy to use, and very organized.
  9. Brainscape- The ultimate flashcard app!! I love how you can access the cards on the internet, within the iPad app, and on your iPhone. This is by far the best flashcard app that I have ever used.
  10. ClassDojo- This app, I would say, is mostly for Elementary teachers. It is very animated but allows you to track information, make graphs, and create reports for students behavior in class.
  11. MindNode- Great app for teachers and students. It helps you create brain webs for brainstorming, note taking, and whatever else you want.
  12. Google Chrome- Sad to say, but sometimes certain websites and website applications still don't work on Safari. By getting the Chrome app you can make sure that never happens.
  13. Pages- Apple's version of word... you just need it.
  14. MyScript Calculator- Screw that boring calculator app with basic buttons! This application lets you write out your problem and solves it right there for you. It knows advanced mathematics, trig, and lots of other stuff!
  15. DragonDictation- If you ever feel like not typing your paper, just talk it out with this app and it will write it all for you.
  16. SAT Up- There are lots of SAT prep apps out in the stores--personally (since I'm a college student already), I never used this application; however, I would recommend that all high schoolers get something now to help them prepare!
  17. Dictionary- The dictionary app through dictionary.com is amazing. It notifies you of the word of the day every morning, can say the word out loud to you, and so much more... just like the website.
  18. Google Translate- This is a basic translator. Perfect for any language class.
  19. Kno Textbooks- If you can't find your textbooks on Kindle or iBooks you can try this app.
  20. WikiBot- An application for wikipedia. Now I'm sure you all know that you really shouldn't quote from sources from Wikipedia... but, it's still a great learning tool.
You can find all sorts of applications here that Apple listed as some of their best education apps.
Again, let me know if there are any apps that you want to hear more about. I have a couple of videos and lots of posts planned!

Tuesday Twenty-- Twenty works of art I have to memorize for tomorrow's test

Hey critters!

Tomorrow I will be having my first big term test for my Renaissance Art History class. I took this class for no other reason than that I needed this credit. I thought that an art history class would be fun because it is something that I have never really learned about before. Thankfully, I do find it very interesting; however, the tests are basically about memorization of the paintings, buildings, and sculptures that we discussed in class with a little bit of using your ability to apply the terms we studied. It shouldn't be too bad, so today I wanted to share with you 20 of the 85 or something works of art that I need to memorize artist, title, and date for by tomorrow.

Here's this week's Tuesday Twenty:

Twenty works of art I have to memorize for tomorrow's test
(Listed in Artist, Title, *sometimes location*, and Date format)
  1. Jean Pucelle, Arrest of Christ and Annunciation, 1325-28
  2. Duccio, Maesta--front panel, 1308-11
  3. Giotto, Entry into Jerusalem (at Arena Chapel), 1305-06
  4. Ghiberti, John the Baptist, 1412-16
  5. Donatello, St. Mark, 1411-13
  6. Gentile da Fabriano, Adoration of the Magi, 1423
  7. Masaccio, Madonna and Child Enthroned, 1426
  8. Fra Angelico, Annunciation, 1440-45
  9. Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482
  10. Filippo Brunelleschi, Dome, Cathedral of Florence, 1420-36
  11. Leon Battista Alberti, S. Andrea, Mantua, 1470
  12. Limbourg Brothers, Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, 1413-16
  13. Robert Campin, Merode Altarpiece, 1425-28
  14. Jan van Eyck, Giovanni Arnolfini and his Bride, 1434
  15. Rogier van der Weyden, Deposition, 1435
  16. Leonardo da Vinci, The Last Supper 1495-97/98
  17. Michelangelo, Moses, 1513-15
  18. Raphael, Madonna of the Meadow, 1505-06
  19. Pontormo, Descent from the Cross, 1525-28
  20. Titian, Venus of Urbino, 1538
So, I know that this list can be very daunting…and that's not even all of them. The way that I am getting though all of this is by using flashcards. Check out the flashcards I made for this test here on my brainscape account. I love this site!!

Share this post if you love Renaissance art! Comment below if you want to see a 'how I use brainscape' post :)

Tuesday Twenty-- Twenty reasons I love Indiana University

Hey critters!

Before we begin, I just want to apologize for being a bit MIA this past week. I was and still am a bit under the weather. Also, it was the first week of classes for the second term, and it took me a little while to get used to the new schedule.

Anyways, I hope you all had a lovely MLK Jr. Day, but now it's back to work time for me.

Here's this week's Tuesday Twenty:

Twenty reasons I love Indiana University
  1. All of the buildings (except one) are made out of limestone which makes campus absolutely gorgeous
  2. For every tree they tear down in construction they plant two more on campus somewhere
  3. We are extremely into recycling
  4. There are career resources and more available to ALL students
  5. Diversity is important
  6. They care about your health-- every student has two free sessions to visit an on campus counseling center
  7. The library is huge and has everything you need
  8. All students can get a free massage at the health center.
  9. The food courts are like a hub for mini restaurants, and you can get nearly anything you want from sushi to sandwiches
  10. Professors have specific times to meet with students, but will take any extra time you need if you just communicate
  11. There are so many clubs and organizations for anyone to join
  12. The mall is only like a couple blocks away
  13. We have amazing art and attractions that always awe me every time I see them
  14. Professors talk to you as their equal; if you put in the effort on homework, projects, and communication so will they
  15. It's a huge community and every day you can meet someone new
  16. Even though it's a very large community, there is still a small town feel
  17. Many people hate all of the construction that seems to constantly be going on; however, I see this as a positive- I am going to a school that is always growing, expanding, learning, and changing
  18. They try to incorporate technology because IU understands that this is the future
  19. There is literally a niche for everyone
  20. The campus is stunning snow, rain, or shine!

Day 20-- How important you think education is [January 30 Day Challenge]

Hey critters!

In a previous post, I mentioned that I was accepting the challenge to post every day; however, not every post will appear on my blog. To see them all you can check out my tumblr account.

Click here to see: Day 1Day 2Day 3Day 4, Day 5, Day 6Day 7, Day 8Day 9, Day 10, Day 11, Day 12, Day 13, Day 14, Day 15, Day 16, Day 17, Day 18, Day 19

Today I have been told to talk about How important I think education is.
Education is very important, okay, end of story.

I think that education is important in today's society because, in the end, it teaches you a job force and allows you to advance in the world.

I believe that education is very important... education of basic facts and skills that a person learns in the earlier years of schooling set a great foundation for future learning. College is VERY important! When entering college you begin focusing your learning on things that you are interested in and begin traveling down that path to reach a degree in the area in which you plan on working for the rest of your life. That being said, without those basic facts and skills that you learned in the beginning elementary level, you would not be able to advance and build your knowledge at the college level.

Education is important-- the beginning skills you learn can build into a great stepping stone for future learning. Then, specialization and career focused learning that you achieve in college makes you truly marketable in the job force.
